Before you leave the test centre on your driving
test, you will be asked any two of the following safety questions.:
1.
Open
the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell
me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Open the bonnet by using
the bonnet catch located on the side wall just
forward
of the passenger door.
Release the bonnet using the second catch just under front of
the bonnet.
Use the bonnet stay to hold the
bonnet open.
Answer
Locate
the dipstick (

) and remove. Wipe clean. Replace fully back into
holder and remove again. Read
the oil level between the high and low
marks on the dipstick. If oil
is required fill at the appropriate place (

2.
Show
me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is
working before starting a journey.
Answer : When the engine is
turned off the steering will feel heavy. When the
engine is turned on the
steering should feel light and the steering wheel
easy to turn. If the steering
does not become lighter or becomes heavy
during the journey, you should
stop and investigate further.

3.
Open
the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and
tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Answer : Open the bonnet by using
the bonnet catch located on the side wall just
Forward of the passenger door.
Then release the bonnet using the
Second catch just under front of
the bonnet.
Use the bonnet stay to hold the
bonnet.
Locate
the coolant expansion chamber (

) within the engine bay and check
that the fluid in between the
Min & Max Lines printed on the side.

4.
Show
me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
Answer : Pull the parking brake
to its on position and check that it secures itself
when clicked into place. By
putting pressure on the top of the handbrake
it should stay in place. The
handbrake should also secure the car before
it reaches the end of its
working travel.

5.
Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you
would check the windscreen washer level.
Answer : Open the bonnet by using
the bonnet catch located on the sidewall just
Forward of the passenger door.
Then release the bonnet using the
Second catch just under front of
the bonnet.
Use the bonnet stay to hold the
bonnet.
Locate
the windscreen washer bottle (

) and fill using clean water.

6.
Show
me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).
Answer : Sound the horn to
check it is working
|

7.
Open
the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how
you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Answer : Open the bonnet by using
the bonnet catch located on the sidewall just
Forward of the passenger door.
Then release the bonnet using the
Second catch just under front of
the bonnet.
Use the bonnet stay to hold the
bonnet.
Identify
the brake fluid reservoir (
5
) and check that the hydraulic fluid inside
is between the Min & Max levels
printed on the side.

8.
Tell
me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.
Answer :I would Back the car up
against a reflective surface such as a garage
door,
or a shop window, and check to see if the brake lights are working by
making
use of reflection, or if there
is anyone around get somebody to help.

9.
Show
me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working.
Answer : Switch on the light
with light switch located inside the car, then walk
around the car to check that
all lights are working. Don’t forget to check
the high and dipped headlights.

10.
Tell
me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre
pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
Answer : The information for
the tyre pressures is located in the manufacturers
handbook which is located in
the glove compartment. Tyre pressures
should be checked when the
tyres are cold and remember to refit the
dust covers

11.
Tell
me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient
tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
Answer : A tyre must have at
least 1.6milimetres of tread depth around the centre
¾ breadth of the tyre, and the
entire circumference with no lumps, cuts
or bulges.

12.
Tell
me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting your
journey.
Answer : Brakes should not feel
spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set of and
should not pull to one side
